The Pelican Optimization Algorithm (POA) was invented in 2022 by Pavel Trojovský and Mohammad Dehghani at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, University of Hradec Králové, Czech Republic.
It is a nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm that models the hunting behavior of pelicans. The algorithm simulates two main stages of pelican hunting—searching for prey and cooperative attacking—to balance exploration and exploitation in solving optimization problems. Since its introduction, POA has been widely applied and extended (for example, as Improved POA or IPOA) for solving engineering, energy optimization, and load dispatch problems.
